Gigi percepatan yang digunakan tergantung kepada kecepatan kendaraan pada kecepatan rendah atau menanjak digunakan gigi percepatan 1 dan seterusnya kalau kecepatan semakin tinggi, demikian pula sebaliknya kalau mengurangi kecepatan gigi percepatan diturunkan, pengereman dapat dibantu dengan penurunan gigi percepatan.
Synchromesh
Synchromesh adalah perlengkapan transmisi yang berfungsi untuk menyamakan putaran antar gigi yang akan disambung sehingga perpindahan gigi percepatan dapat dilakukan secara mulus. Cara kerjanya saat handel transmisi pada posisi netral, maka synchromesh berada ditengah tidak berpengaruh atau dipengaruhi oleh kedua roda gigi yang ada disampingnya.
